The comfort of a warm fireplace is like no other. Read ahead and complete these tasks this fall so that you can relax and enjoy that warmth and peace of mind when winter weather hits.

Heating System

Make sure your heaters have adequate heat clearance.  The heat clearance changes depending on the heat source.  The clearance recommendations mean the distance that is considered to be safe between a heat-producing appliance.

Have your heating system clean and inspected by a professional if you haven’t done that in a while.

Doors and Windows

You can remove screens to prevent condensation.  Storing them in a closet or the garage will also keep them safe from the elements like wind and ice.

Check to make sure windows and doors are tightly sealed.  Caulk in cracks and spaces if needed.

Fire Detectors

Check the smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors by pressing the test button and replace batteries if needed.

For fire extinguishers, ensure the seal is still intact and that all members of the family know where it is and how to use it

Air Exchange and Ducts

Give the filters and screens a good cleaning so you and your family can breathe clean air. Vacuum air ducts to remove dust.

Sump Pump

If you have one:  Check that it is functioning properly by slowly pouring a bucket of water into the tank. The pump should immediately activate to clear out the water.

Air Conditioner

Regarding portable air conditioners: Clean filters and dust off machines before storing them for the winter.  This will ensure fresh new life in the machine when it is time to get it out again in the summer months.
